Should I Remove a Wasp Nest Myself?

Written by PestMan Editorial TeamTechnical review pendingPublished Updated

Quick answer

Only a very small paper wasp nest, reached easily without a ladder, is reasonable for a confident, non-allergic adult to deal with, and even then protective clothing and label-approved products are needed. Large nests, nests in walls, roofs or the ground, European wasp nests, and anyone with a sting allergy should be left to a professional.

Why this happens

Wasps defend their nests and can sting repeatedly. European wasps are especially defensive and can release alarm signals that bring more wasps.

Nests inside cavities are hidden and can be far bigger than they appear; blocking the entrance can drive wasps inside the house.

Falls from ladders while being stung are a real injury risk.

What you can do

  • Keep people and pets away from the nest.
  • Note its location and size, and whether wasps enter a hole in a wall or the ground.
  • Check whether European wasps are a reportable pest in your state.
  • Arrange professional removal for anything other than a tiny, accessible paper wasp nest.

What not to do

  • Do not block nest entrances in walls or roofs.
  • Do not use fire or petrol on nests.
  • Do not attempt removal if you have ever had a severe reaction to a sting.
Safety first

Call 000 immediately if someone stung has trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or collapses. Follow their anaphylaxis action plan if they have one.

When professional help may be needed

Most wasp nests near homes are best handled by a professional with protective equipment.
