Why Do I Have Fleas When I Don’t Have Pets?
Quick answer
Fleas can appear in a home without pets when dormant pupae left by a previous occupant’s pet hatch, when wildlife such as possums or feral cats live under the house or in the roof, or when fleas are carried in from outdoors. Pupae can wait weeks to months in carpets and then hatch in response to vibration and warmth.
Why this happens
Flea pupae are protected inside a sticky cocoon. They can stay dormant until they sense a host through vibration, body heat or carbon dioxide, then hatch and jump on the first host available, which may be a person.
This is why people moving into a vacant rental or returning from holidays sometimes notice a sudden burst of flea bites.
Possums, rats and stray cats can maintain flea populations under houses, in roof voids and in yards.
What you may be seeing
- Small itchy bites around ankles and lower legs.
- Tiny dark jumping insects on socks or light-coloured floors.
What you can do
- Vacuum carpets, rugs, furniture and skirting boards thoroughly every day for two to three weeks, and empty the vacuum outside.
- Wash bedding and rugs on a hot cycle.
- Check under the house and roof void for signs of wildlife or strays.
- Wear long socks for a few days to reduce bites while vacuuming triggers pupae to hatch.
Follow label directions for any flea product and keep children and pets off treated surfaces for the time stated on the label.
When professional help may be needed
Professional flea treatments usually include an insect growth regulator for carpets and sub-floor areas. Wildlife should be managed separately according to state rules.
