Can I Get Rid of Bed Bugs Myself?
Quick answer
Small, early bed bug problems can sometimes be reduced with hot washing, drying, vacuuming, mattress encasements and careful inspection, but complete elimination without professional help is difficult. Bed bugs hide in tiny cracks, survive months without feeding, and some populations tolerate common insecticides. Most established infestations need a professional program with follow-up visits.
Why this happens
Bed bugs shelter in mattress seams, bed frames, furniture joints, skirting boards and power points near beds. Missing a few is enough for the population to rebuild.
Eggs are protected and hatch after treatment, which is why follow-up inspections are needed.
Store-bought sprays and "bug bombs" often fail to reach hiding places and can drive bed bugs into other rooms.
What you can do
- Wash bedding and clothing on hot and dry on the hottest dryer setting for at least 30 minutes.
- Vacuum mattress seams, bed frames and nearby carpet edges, then seal and bin the vacuum contents outside.
- Fit bed-bug-proof encasements to the mattress and base.
- Move the bed away from walls and keep bedding off the floor.
- Inspect again every few days and record what you find.
What not to do
- Do not sleep in other rooms or on the couch; bed bugs follow and spread.
- Do not use outdoor or agricultural insecticides indoors or on bedding.
- Do not throw out furniture without wrapping and labelling it, which can spread bed bugs to others.
Use only products registered for bed bugs and indoor use, and follow the label exactly. Never apply insecticides to mattresses or bedding unless the label allows it.
When professional help may be needed
If you still find bed bugs after a couple of weeks, or they are in more than one room or neighbouring units, a professional program is usually the most reliable path. Expect inspection, treatment and at least one follow-up visit.
