Do I Need to Leave My House During Pest Control?

Written by PestMan Editorial TeamTechnical review pendingPublished Updated

Quick answer

It depends on the treatment and product. Many targeted treatments, such as gel baits and bait stations, do not require you to leave. Spray treatments inside often require people and pets to stay out until surfaces are dry or for a set re-entry time. Fumigation always requires everyone to leave. The product label and your pest manager should tell you exactly.

Why this happens

Re-entry periods are set on product labels to manage exposure. Following them is required by law.

Some people, including pregnant people, infants and people with respiratory conditions, may prefer to stay away longer. Ask your doctor if you have concerns.

What you can do

  • Ask your pest manager what they will apply, where, and how long to stay out.
  • Plan to take pets with you if required.
  • Ventilate rooms after re-entry if advised.
  • Wipe food-preparation surfaces before use if advised.

When professional help may be needed

A licensed pest manager should give you clear written instructions before and after treatment.
