Cockroaches in Brisbane

Brisbane’s heat and humidity suit several large outdoor cockroach species, while German cockroaches are common in kitchens and apartments.

Updated 20 September 2026

Species Brisbane residents see

  • American cockroach: drains, sewers and sub-floors.
  • Australian cockroach: gardens, mulch and roof voids.
  • Smokybrown cockroach: trees, gutters and roof spaces; flies to lights.
  • German cockroach: kitchens and bathrooms, especially in apartments and older units.

Local factors

Raised Queenslander sub-floors, dense gardens, palms and a large stormwater network all provide habitat close to homes. Activity peaks on warm, humid nights from November to March.
