Why Do Cockroaches Come Out at Night?

Written by PestMan Editorial TeamTechnical review pendingPublished Updated

Quick answer

Cockroaches are nocturnal. Darkness protects them from predators and from drying out, so they spend the day packed into tight, humid hiding spots and emerge at night to find food and water. Seeing cockroaches during the day can mean hiding places are overcrowded, a population is large, or they have been disturbed.

Why this happens

Cockroaches lose moisture through their bodies, so cool, dark, humid places help them survive. At night, humidity rises and temperatures are stable, and people and predators are less active.

Their internal body clock (circadian rhythm) drives a burst of activity in the first hours of darkness. That is why switching on a kitchen light late at night so often reveals cockroaches that were not visible during the day.

Large outdoor species are also attracted to lights on warm nights and may fly or run towards doors and windows.

What you may be seeing

  • Cockroaches scattering when lights are switched on.
  • Cockroaches on walls, benches or around bins late at night.
  • Daytime sightings, which can indicate a heavier infestation.

What you can do

  • Check with a torch after dark to see where cockroaches are coming from; this reveals hiding places and entry points.
  • Clean up food and water before bed.
  • Reduce outdoor lighting near doors, or switch to warmer bulbs.
  • Use monitoring sticky traps along walls to track activity over a week.

When professional help may be needed

Regular daytime sightings, or many cockroaches at night, suggest an established population. That is a good time to consider a professional inspection.
